SUP southeast!

Paddleboarding popularity has exploded over the last few years. And Ontario Parks’ rental teams are onboard with the trend.

No matter what your age, paddleboarding is a wonderful way to explore, observe nature and spend time outside.

Charleston Lake lends itself perfectly to paddleboarding with kilometres of shoreline, scenic bays and motorboat restricted areas

Whether you’re planning a short jaunt or an extended paddle, it’s an easy sport to just get up and go! Limited gear is required and no special clothing is necessary except dressing for the weather and temperature.

If you’ve never been on a paddleboard here are some things you  may want to keep in mind:

  • Don’t paddle too close to shore. You’re likely to sink further into the water if you fall from a standing position so staying in deeper water prevents you from hitting bottom if you topple
  • Putting one hand on the end of the paddle and the other on the shaft will give you the most control and make the most of your strokes
  • Keep your core muscles turned on to avoid tiring your arms

To stay safe on the water:

  • Be aware of changing weather conditions and avoid going out alone
  • Pick a calm day, and dress appropriately for the air and water temperature
  • Make sure you have drinking water and some snacks with you. Although it may look effortless, it is a good workout for your entire body

Like other water sports in Ontario Parks, a PFD and safety pack is required and included with your equipment rental fee.
